Ancient Arabian nights meet futuristic technology

Horse carriages and racing cars rarely meet. Yet this weekend, the Formula E is visiting the Moroccan city of Marrakesh to race its futuristic-looking cars next door to the city’s ancient medina.

Traditions from The Arabian Nights come to meet tomorrow’s technologies as the race track runs along the 900-year-old city wall. It is only a few minutes from the main square Djemaa el Fna and the adjacent souks, which earned Marrakesh a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list. 

Hoping for good weather 

Against this exotic backdrop Schaeffler pilots Daniel Abt and Lucas di Grassi hope to make more headway. At the opening race in December, the title defenders from Team Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler scored their first points of the season – despite difficult conditions as the race took place on one of the few rainy days in Saudi Arabia. They improved from 11th and 18th on the grid to eighth and ninth in the race.

The event in Morocco marks Formula E’s third visit to Circuit International Automobile Moulay El Hassan. The circuit, featuring a mix of a permanent race track and public roads is close to three kilometers long and has twelve turns. 

Schaeffler in Formula E

Schaeffler is one of the co-founders and one of the most notable and successful players in Formula E. In the 2016/2017 season, Team Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler won the drivers’ title (Lucas di Grassi) and in the following season, it won the teams’ title (Lucas di Grassi/Daniel Abt). Schaeffler has been contributing its know-how to the development of the powertrain since 2015. In doing so, the company demonstrates its expertise in forward-thinking technologies and presents ideas for sustainable mobility for tomorrow in the innovative electric racing series. 

New technology

Formula E is entering a new era. The most conspicuous innovation for this season is that every driver has only one race car. The second-generation cars mark the end of the mid-race car swaps previously required as the battery capacity is now sufficient for the entire race. The cars’ futuristic design without a rear wing and the Halo protection system above the cockpit are also new.
